Domestic Violence

Anawim support women who are at risk of serious injury or homicide due to domestic violence.

We have a CAADA qualified IDVA (Independent Domestic Violence Advisor) on site who works closely with these women.

This work includes:

  • Supporting the client through the criminal justice system; from reporting to police to attending court with them
  • Completing an assessment and risk assessment to establish what the needs and risks are to the client
  • Giving advice on steps that can be taken to keep the client safe, including accommodation advice, referral to a refuge when necessary, advice on staying safe e.g. Non-molestation orders
  • Appropriate referrals to any Agencies and services that will complement the work we do; therefore working holistically to keep the woman as safe and well as possible

As part of the Domestic Violence support we offer, our IDVA runs weekly groups:

"The Freedom Programme" which help the women to identify the different types of domestic abuse, learn the warning signs, the effects of domestic abuse on children and work towards moving forward with their lives confidently.

"You can heal your life" based on the very popular book by Louise Hay. This works well with those who have suffered domestic abuse as it teaches the women how to begin to like themselves; something that survivors of abuse often find difficult.

The work is very much led by the women themselves - ensuring the women are aware of the choices available to them so they are able to make an informed decision about the very best way to move forward with their lives

“Not everyone is ready to leave an abusive relationship and it's about ensuring the woman is aware of how to keep herself safe in that instance as well as supporting those ready to move on”. (Anawim IDVA)
